He never went to college, never got a degree, never wrote a book, never got married, never traveled far from his home, and never held a political office. His dad was a construction worker, his mother a single teenager, and he grew up in a little town in the middle of nowhere. Yet, more books have been written about him, more songs have been sung to him, more movies have been filmed about him, and more paintings have been painted of him than anyone in history. More people follow him than any person who has ever walked this earth. His name is Jesus.
C.S. Lewis said there are only three ways to view Jesus. He is either a liar, a lunatic, or Lord. The most remarkable thing about him was not that he healed the sick, cast out demons, or fed thousands of people with only five loaves of bread and two fish. The most remarkable thing about him is that he rose from the dead. No one else has ever resurrected from the grave, and Jesus did so by his own power. Amazingly, the people who knew him best—his family, friends, and followers—all claimed that Jesus rose from the grave and they gave the remainder of their lives to share that truth with others, even though it would cost them their own lives.
The reason Jesus had the ability to rise from death was because he is God. The story of human history is that all of us have run from God and abandoned his rule over our lives. Rather than trust and obey God, we decided we would be our own god and commit cosmic treason against him. Treason against a king requires a significant penalty, but treason against the Maker and Creator of the universe is infinitely worse. In God’s justice, he could have forsaken us forever, but he chose to pursue us with a grand plan of redemption that would eventually cause him to enter human history and suffer the penalty for our treason himself.
Jesus Christ lived the life you could not live, he died the death you should have died, and he conquered the grave you could not conquer. This is the gospel. Gospel means “good news.” The gospel changes everything. When the gospel of Jesus rings true in your heart, it changes everything about you. This is what it means to be a Christian. A Christian is someone who rests the weight of their soul on the truth of Jesus and aims their life to follow him.
